As a parent, I’ve learned that kids don’t always remember the expensive outings.

They remember running through sprinklers, hunting for butterflies, eating popsicles in the backyard, and laughing until their stomachs hurt.

Some of our favorite summer memories have come from the simplest activities.

If you’re looking for easy ways to keep your kids busy this summer without spending a fortune, here are some of our family favorites.

Backyard Water Day

One of our easiest summer activities is turning the backyard into a mini water park.

A simple sprinkler, splash pad, or reusable water balloons can keep kids entertained for hours.

Nature Scavenger Hunt

Whenever the kids start saying they’re bored, we head outside with a simple scavenger hunt.

Can you find:

  • A yellow flower?
  • A butterfly?
  • A smooth rock?
  • A feather?

Adding binoculars or a magnifying glass makes the adventure even more exciting.

Picnic at the Park

Sometimes a change of scenery is all it takes.

We pack sandwiches, fruit, and snacks, grab a picnic blanket, and head to the nearest park.

The kids love it, and it feels like a mini adventure without much planning.

Sidewalk Chalk Afternoon

This is one of those activities that never seems to get old.

The kids create obstacle courses, draw giant pictures, and even play hopscotch.

Backyard Camping

You don’t need to drive to a campground to have fun.

Set up a tent in the backyard, bring flashlights, tell stories, and enjoy a special evening outdoors.

Bike Ride Adventure

Instead of riding the same route, choose a new trail or neighborhood and make it an adventure.

Bonus points if the destination includes ice cream.

DIY Obstacle Course

Using things we already have around the house, we’ve created obstacle courses that the kids absolutely love.

Jump ropes, cones, and hula hoops are perfect for this.

Visit a Local Splash Pad

On especially hot days, splash pads are one of our favorite destinations.

Final Thoughts

The best summer memories don’t have to come with a big price tag.

A little sunshine, a few simple activities, and quality time together are often all kids need.

And years from now, those are usually the moments they’ll remember most.
